Swim For Exceptional Children
There is a wonderful year round program through the YMCA in Tacoma that offers swimming for exceptional children.
The S.W.I.M. program is a therapeutic recreational pool program for children 4 months to 18 years of age, and is directed by both an Occupational/Physical Therapist as well as a specialty instructor. The letters S.W.I.M. stand for swimming with integrated movement. The swim curriculum focuses on swimming skills for children with disabilities. This curriculum addresses the needs of children with all types of disabilities (i.e. cerebral palsy, ADHD, autism, learning disabilities, spina bifida, etc.) The curriculum focuses on both the therapeutic needs and swimming skills on the children.
S.F.E.C. Swim for Exceptional Children is a year round program consisting of two segments: the school year program, from September to June, and the summer program, from late June to early August. There are two sessions. The first session focuses on the needs of children with disabilities who are working towards developing and improving their swimming skills. Traditional therapeutic activities (e.g. range of motion, balance) are also included. The second group spends most of the time in the hot pool. A majority of the class time is spent on traditional therapeutic activities with beginning swimming skills introduced when appropriate.
Welcome back to school. The EFMP program will be having special events and we are reviving the Autism Support Group.
A membership in the YMCA is required, but the active duty member is free and there is financial assistance available through the YMCA. Due to the nature of the program, in temperatures of 86 to 100 degree water, a Medical Referral will be required. Contact them for an application package or you can come in to EFMP at ACS and we will make you a copy.
The monthly newsletter will be a venue for advertising workshops, helpful websites, community events, and EFMP activities.
