myLot Discussions on The VHF Backpack Radio
UHF...VHF...Rabbit ears.....
I just answered a discussion about those old rotary phones, wanting to know who remembered them and stuff. That discussion reminded me of something else. Does anyone remember the old TV's? I'm talking about the ones that had two dials on them for changing the channel, before the days of cable and remote control. There was a UHF dial and a VHF dial. In order to get channels on the UHF dial, you had to set The VHF dial to a certain place first; but The VHF dial worked independently of the UHF dial. These TV's also had the rabbit ear antennas. Does anyone remember these old TV's? How many of you used to own one? We had one of those types of TV's in our house when I was a kid.

South Africa World Cup 2010... and the shooting's already started
Only 70 miles from a 2010 World Cup football stadium, a farmer's wife and a boy aged 13 learn to defend themselves with lethal weapons. They say thousands of white landowners have been killed by Zimbabwe-style marauders; their black rulers accuse them of belligerence and right-wing tendencies. Aidan Hartley reports on the war of words you won't read about in your World Cup holiday brochure.Bella wakes. She hears a strangled, gurgling sound. It’s the dog, she thinks.‘Peter, there’s something wrong,’ she says to her husband. Noises emerge from the room of her mother-in-law, who’s 98 and confined to a wheelchair. It’s 1am. Bella gets up and walks out of the bedroom. In the hall she sees a young man who at first she thinks is her son. Except he’s black, wears a balaclava and is pointing a gun at her.‘He comes for me,’ says Bella, her hand before her tear-stained face.‘He’s going to shoot me! I trip as I run back to the bedroom. Peter comes to the door but he has nothing in his hand, no pistol. I hear a gun go off. I hear my mother-in-law screaming. I lock the door and telephone my son. I tell him: “I think they shot Pa!”’Two men are outside the bedroom window...
DTV transition..are you ready? (US only--sorry!)
As myLotters in the US are aware, there has been months of talk about the DTV transition set to take place next month (originally in February). How many people are actually ready?I bought 3 TVs in January 2004--they'd be considered new, right? WRONG! None of them were able to be used without a converter box. I sold two and the third I've still got. My roommate has cable (and pays for it), so we don't have to worry about it. I previously had DirecTV, but not everyone can afford that luxury (I know I can't!).So how many of you are prepared (either through converter boxes, cable or satellite)? I feel like this is being forced on us...too many are actually unable to pay the electric bill, let alone buy a converter box or cable! And after the government ran out of the coupons in the first round, I never heard of them again! I feel that if the government wants to reserve the current analog signal for emergency use, perhaps they could have paid for the converter box? Or maybe the government got the VHF stations, while smaller stations got the UHF (weaker) stations, so at least everyone had the opportunity to watch something? I just feel like it's a bit unfair to those of us who...
Time for a new scanner
My old desktop scanner has seen much better days. It is about ten years old so I shall not complain about it slowly dying[em]lol[/em] So, I thought, what the heck, I should treat myself to a new scanner. Off to Ebay I went. I found, and bought, the scanner in the photo. A Realistic Pro-34 VHF 200 Channel Direct Entry[em]thumbup[/em] I used to have a handheld a long, long time ago, but it walked out of my house thanks to a relative and I didn't replace it. I always meant to replace it but found other things to spend my money on I guess. But now, it's time[em]happy[/em] The scanner isn't new, but it was pretty well priced. I got it for forty bucks, including shipping! How about you? Do you enjoy listening to the local police and fire departments? How about other things that can be heard on a scanner?
Do we have to upgrade our Air traffic Service?
Just recently, the Philippines was downgraded to category 2 by the ICAO. It means flying within the Philippine skies is not that safe.Although we definitely cannot say that our air traffic service providers are inefficient, perhaps is because of our equipment. We, the Philippine ATS providers, still use equipments long have been junked by other countries. Other southeast Asian countries are already using CPDLC (Computer Pilot Data Link Communications) for enroute flights while we, still use the conventional Very High Frequency and High Frequency transceiver. Every now and then we still even have to notify our neighboring country that our VHF or HF system is "again" down until further advise. How sad.. What's worse, we have had such a number of highly technical people going out of the country just in search for a greener pasture. One main reason is the low pay. Can you imagine working a job considered as one of the most stressful one and you get paid for like four hundred dollars? I think upgrading our service would be to upgrade everything in it and that includes the equipment and upgrading the pay of these lowly employees who, as one foreign pilot said, "these guys...
182 hits, 13 watching and not one bid...
Who would have thought you could get 182 hits and 13 watching on a single item, and not have a bid.I did have some goof email me and make an offer on the HAM vhf radios I had listed for $65US. He offered $75 right now. Wasn't that just the most generous thing? I don't have a buy it now price so I think it's a violation of the rules if I take one that's offered.About 2 days left, so this will be interesting to see what the final price will be if someone is prepared to float $75US buy me. Even got someone from Australia interested in them.
Have you ever told your friends at myLot your real name?
I just simply notice, people post topics, some submit replies, and vice versa, and haven't seen somebody as yet addressing each one their name.Is it more safer to be known only by our myLot username or shall we say callsigns? What are your apprehension why you prefer to be address by friends using your callsigns or myLot username? Are friendship drawn from myLot not that real as we claim it to be?My real first name is really Lowell and friends call me Nikolai, my VHF frequency call. Those that want to share their views please do.
It's a wonder that we know what we are talking about.
There was this SWM I met at the PTA meeting. He had a PHD in childhood disorders like ADD and ADHD. He drove a BMW, in which he went speeding down the road at 80 MPH. After he left the PTA meeting he was talking on his iPhone in the car to his GF. She wasn't really paying attention to him because she and her BFF were speeding down the highway in a VW. They were on their way to the store to see if they could by some food without MSG. One of them told a joke so the BF, the GF and the GF's BFF were all LOL. The BF said, "That's why I love you darling, you are always able to make me LMAO." When the GF and her BFF arrived home with their MSG-free goodies, this SWM who was her BF proposed and she accepted. They left the party to go talk to a minister who had his MDiv in theology. He told them that before they get married, they should see an MD for bloodtests for VD, HIV and other STDs. While they were on their honeymoon, the new bride got upset. Her DH apparently had wandering eyes and kept saying, "Now there's a MILF!" When they returned home she immediately phoned her BFF and they went out for drinks so she could cry about her frustrations. Since the BFF had a BS in...
